Isfahan Song

Isfahan Song is a silent yet resonant act of defiance performed within the sanctified acoustics of the Imam Mosque. Seated beneath the dome—the structure itself amplifying the hum of sound—I began to sing nonsensical words, an act seldom heard and rarely permitted: in Iran, women are forbidden to sing in public or religious spaces.

This intermezzo of voice, emerging in poetic nonsense, turned the mosque’s walls into hidden witnesses. For a moment, the sacred architecture became a vessel for the prohibited, and my song wove through the arches not as devotion, but as an unveiling. In breaking this silence, I claimed space, blurred boundaries, and transformed restriction into resonance.
