During the IBAFF International Film Festival in Murcia, I created “Flux” as an homage to Bill Viola’s elemental works, especially his exploration of water and fire as forces of transformation. I invited the audience to pour hot water into the cloth I had designed and was wearing. My plan was to remain seated on the ground, but the moment the scalding water touched me, I stood abruptly—just as another pour landed on my back and shoulder.
A slight scream escaped me, and the audience became aware of my pain. I began walking in circles, the pace growing faster until I collapsed. In that moment, the work shifted from a symbolic act into a raw embodiment of how we often hurt others without understanding the depth of our actions. Sometimes empathy is withheld from those perceived as distant or untouchable, whether through cultural difference, skin color, or other assumptions. “Flux” sought to close that distance, making the invisible weight of suffering impossible to ignore.
