In 2012, I created Sara, a video art piece inspired by the Azerbaijani folk story of Sara and Choban Khan — the tragic tale of a young woman who chose the waters of the Aras River over a forced marriage, remaining faithful to her love. For the soundtrack, I chose the folk song Sari Galin, whose haunting melody mirrors the longing and sorrow at the heart of the legend.
In the video, a girl walks slowly by the river, seen only through her reflection in the water or in scattered puddles. This imagery reimagines the tale, suggesting that after her death, Sara’s spirit lingers within rivers and pools, moving silently through the land. The work becomes a meditation on love, loss, and the way stories and songs carry the essence of a soul long after it has vanished from sight.
