Rooted Resonance is a site-specific video performance, photographic series, and installation that explores our profound connection with Mother Earth. Drawing inspiration from Andrew Wyeth’s iconic Christina’s World, this work reinterprets the meditative and vulnerable posture of the seated figure within the landscape. In my performance, I move slowly across the shoreline of Utah Lake, rhythmically tapping red wool into the sand in a deliberate pattern. The red wool, symbolizing the Root Chakra, evokes grounding, vitality, and resilience qualities essential to re-forging our bond with nature.
Each gesture of tapping becomes an invocation of healing and reconnection. The red thread, both fragile and persistent, traces a path of presence and care across the earth’s surface. Echoing the emotional stillness and spatial tension in Christina’s World, this work frames the body in relationship to the vast terrain—marking the land not with ownership, but with reverence and intention. Photographs extracted from the performance capture both wide environmental context and intimate details, reflecting the interplay between the ephemeral and the enduring.
The indoor installation recreates the same red wool pattern, extending the gesture into the gallery and inviting viewers to trace the visual memory of the performance. Together, the video, photos, and installation form a meditative environment that honors the natural textures and rhythms of the lake’s edge. Rooted Resonance asks us to slow down, to observe, and to rekindle our own rootedness in the living world.
